Dr. Steven Mays, Psychiatrist
Dr. Steven Mays provides quality psychiatric care to adults in the outpatient setting. He helps adults better understand their mental health condition(s), stabilize mood and functioning, process and heal from trauma, improve focus, and manage complex mental health conditions through thoughtful psychiatric care and medication management. Practicing at Life Stance Health, Dr. Mays serves adults across Colorado, offering a balanced approach that integrates clinical expertise, evidence-based treatment, and genuine attention to each patient’s lived experience. His goal is to help patients feel more grounded, functional, and confident as they navigate daily life. Dr. Mays has extensive experience treating PTSD and trauma-related conditions, mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and substance use concerns. He works closely with patients to develop individualized medication plans while addressing emotional patterns, stress responses, and behavioral habits that impact mental health. His approach emphasizes careful assessment, ongoing collaboration, and adjustments that support both symptom relief and long-term stability. In addition to these core areas, Dr. Mays provides care for ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, psychotic disorders, grief, and midlife transitions, and offers additional psychiatric support based on individual needs. He treats adults across early adulthood through midlife. He has experience working with populations including first responders, military members and veterans, and LGBTQ+ individuals. His clinical approach incorporates medication management alongside therapeutic strategies informed by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness-based practices. Dr. Mays believes effective psychiatric care is collaborative and respectful, combining medical insight with an understanding of each patient’s values, responsibilities, and goals. He prioritizes safety, clarity, and consistency to help patients make informed decisions about their mental health treatment. Outside of his clinical work, Dr. Mays enjoys playing drums, painting, creative writing, practicing yoga, hiking in the Colorado Mountains with his family, and attending live music events.
