Thor Agustsson, Psychiatrist

Dr. Agustsson received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Loyola University and his doctoral degree in Osteopathic Medicine from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his psychiatric residency at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center/Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, LA. Dr. Agustsson is a Member of the American Psychiatric Association, and sits on the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Agustsson provided emergency psychiatric services in Jackson, LA in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina; he assisted in the evacuation of over 50 patients in an acute inpatient psychiatric facility, and provided ongoing crisis treatment. Dr. Agustsson went on to provide emergency evaluation and treatment at Charity/Louisiana University Hospital in the emergency department and hospital wards where he also taught and supervised medical students and first-year residents. Dr. Agustsson then began working for Rural Outreach Psychiatry, a non-profit organization providing outpatient and telemental health psychiatric evaluation and evidence-based psychopharmacologic treatment. At that time, he was also working with clients in an outpatient setting completing psychiatric evaluations and evidence based treatment with the goal of preventing acute inpatient hospitalization. Before joining The Counseling Center, Dr. Agustsson worked at Maine Behavioral Health, an outpatient community mental health center where he provided psychiatric evaluation and evidenced based treatment. Dr. Agustssion has provided psychiatric treatment for adults, adolescents, and children, and has developed specialty in the treatment of ADHD, Mood Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety Disorders including Panic disorder and OCD, patients with co-occurring chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, and Suboxone maintenance. Dr. Agustsson has spoken regionally on opioid addiction and treatment, and is a DEA certified Suboxone treatment provider.
