Christine Calix, Psychologist
Dr. Christine Calix earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Psychology in 1980. She has over 40 years of experience in a variety of clinical settings and has treated both adolescents and adults, conducting individual, group, couples and family therapy.
Dr. Calix provides compassionate, culturally sensitive therapy for individuals and couples, fostering growth, self-awareness, and resilience. She has held clinical positions with the San Diego County Mental Health Department of Forensic Services, and the State of California, in addition to an extensive background in outpatient clinical settings. She has served on the faculty of the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and also taught classes at San Diego State University and other colleges in the San Diego area.
She specializes in stress management, along with the treatment of mood disorders, depression, and ADHD, with a focus on women’s mental health issues, including postpartum disorders and other reproductive health issues. Other areas of expertise include treatment of relationship challenges, work stress, managing grief, trauma, and parenting concerns. Her primary treatment approach prioritizes promoting psychological health, wellness and resiliency. She focuses on trauma-informed care, relational empowerment, and evidence-based treatment approaches tailored to the unique stresses that women face. In particular, she assists young professionals in making major life transitions. She is passionate about helping women balance career and family demands while still prioritizing their own individual health and wellness. Other major focuses of therapy include helping clients avoid the traps of perfectionism, people-pleasing, and in moving past the ‘shoulds,’ that often lead to burn-out. Dr. Calix reflects a therapeutic style that emphasizes empathy, collaboration and creating a safe, supportive environment that allows clients to vent and find a compassionate space for healing. Her overall treatment approach emphasizes helping clients with practical coping skills, setting boundaries, and self-compassion. She assists clients dealing with the pressures of “having it all” and moving from a place of anxious overwhelm to calm confidence. Therapy is the first step towards nurturing one’s authentic self, improving self-esteem and moving towards a place of calm self-acceptance.
Dr. Calix takes an integrative and collaborative approach to treatment within a humanistic-existential framework. She tailors individualized treatment plans using evidence-based methods, including cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, solution-focused, mindfulness-based, and feminist-informed care.
A member of the American Psychological Association, California Psychological Association, and the San Diego Psychological Association, Dr. Calix remains dedicated to professional excellence.
Dr. Calix became a psychologist because of her strong belief in the resilience of women and the transformative power of being heard. She remains passionate about helping clients move from simply surviving to thriving. Her approach is warm and non-judgmental. As a woman, she understands the unique societal pressures and personal challenges women face. She provides a warm, collaborative place to understand patterns and themes and towards a place of empowerment.
